My husband was sick this Mother's Day, so we were close to home this year. I decided to celebrate with doing something that I've wanted to do for years: Plant a lavender hedge.
My front yard walk way doesn't make much sense, and I (and pretty much everyone) primarily use a portion of my grass to walk to my front door. I wanted to make the path more defined, and I thought a lavender hedge would do the trick.
The garden at my front stoop is my herb garden, but I wanted to expand my use of herbs throughout my property.
Supplies:
Purchase lavender starter plants, or you can grow it from seed, but the process will be a much longer one. I bought Phenomenal Lavender from a local green house. Lavender likes full sun and doesn't like to be watered heavily, so keep that in mind when choosing your plant variety.
A prepared garden plot
Compost
A shovel and/or garden trowel
Optional twine and measuring tape
Instructions:
Once your garden plot is prepared, read the instructions for distance requirements between plants for the type of lavender you've purchased/grown. The lavender I bought was required to space 18 inches. I eyeballed it first with testing the layout and then measuring with the length of my feet, from heel-toe heel-toe. You could also mark twine with the exact distance with measuring tape that you need to guide you as you plant.
After you measure the distance between plants, you can dig a hole, loosen the roots at the bottom of the plant, add compost, and gently plant the lavender.
